The concertina bustle design stems from the fact that the characters are often described as insect like, crawling out of crevices when they do emerge from the castle walls. It is also meant to look like gothic vaulted ceilings, alluded to the vast structure of the castle itself.
The boat on her headpiece also draws from Peake's imagery; she is described as 'veering from east to west in gradual curves like a ship that has no precise idea as to which port she is making for'.
The bustle comprises of hand dyed panels and the fabric underneath the fused laser cut face fabric is also hand dyed devore silk.
Irma is quite a minor character but I loved Peake's descriptions of her within the text. She is a vain social climber whose one aim in life is to fnd a suitable husband from among the ranks of the Professor’s of the castle’s school for boys. She spends most of her time dreaming of ways
to attract their attention and is an augmented version of the sterotypical ffties housewife.
